Each college at the University of Hartford has its own coordinator who can explain the specific requirements of its honors program.

Requirements
  • Complete 18+ credits of graded Honors work. All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade (not P/NP).
  • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.50+ and a Grade Point Average of 3.0+ in the Honors work at Graduation.

The Hartford Art School Honors Coordinator helps each student develop a plan to earn the required 18 credits of Honors work through Honors sections of General Education (e.g., Honors WRT) and/or UIS courses, “Honors contract” courses and Upper-level independent study and research projects (e.g. the University Scholar Program) and to include the successful completion of the Senior Thesis (for Art History majors) or the Senior Honors Research Project and Paper (for Studio-Art majors)

Suggested Timetable: 
  1. First Year: Take one or two Honors sections of General Education or other academic courses at the Honors level. (3-6 credits). 
  2. Second Year: Take one or two Honors sections of General Education, Honors Seminars, or other academic courses at the Honors level (3-6 credits). 
  3. Third Year: Take two “Contract Honors” courses at an upper level in your major (6 credits). In the spring of your third year, begin to plan your senior-level honors work and decide if you want to do a University Scholar project. Select a topic and find a faculty member who will direct your project. 
  4. Final Year: Complete the Senior Honors Art History Thesis or the Senior Honors Creative Research Project & Paper (3-6 credits). 
The 18 honors credits for Studio-Art majors are normally: 
  • 9 credits of academic honors-level courses which may include Honors sections of General Education, Honors Seminars, or other academic courses taken at the Honors level with an honors contract. (see contract form on p. 18) 
  • 6 credits of studio courses at the upper-level (300 or 400) in your major. These are done with an honors contract 
  • 3 credits as your Senior Honors Research Project and Paper.* This is done with an honors contract, and can also be submitted for presentation as a University Scholar Project 
The 18 honors credits for Art History majors are normally: 
  • 6 credits of academic honors-level courses which may include Honors sections of General Education, Honors Seminars, or other academic courses taken at the Honors level with an honors contract. (see contract form on p. 18) 
  • 6 credits of art history courses at the upper-level (300 or 400). These are done with an honors contract
  • 6 credits as your Senior Thesis.* This is done in your senior year by enrolling in HON 493 and HON 494, and can also be submitted for presentation as a University Scholar Project

There are two tracks for students to complete the A&S Honors Program:

  • Honors with Thesis
  • Honors (which involves more coursework)

The requirements of both tracks include 18+ credits of graded honors coursework. All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade (not P/NP), and students must complete these requirements with an overall Grade Point Average of 3.25+ and a 3.0+ in honors.

Honors with Thesis Requirements:

  • 6+ credits of honors general education courses (e.g., honors WRT and UIS) and/or “honors contract” courses
  • 6 credits of 300-level honors seminars, the Humanities Center Seminar, and with the permission of the A&S Honors Coordinator, students in the natural sciences may substitute a 300- or 400-level “honors contract” course for one of the seminars. Psychology Honors students, with permission, may substitute PSY 487 for one honors seminar.
  • A 6-credit honors thesis (HON 493 Honors Research and HON 494 Honors Thesis). Psychology Honors students may substitute PSY 488 for HON 493, but they must take HON 494 to complete the A&S Honors Program requirements.

Honors Requirements:

  • 6+ credits of honors general education courses (e.g., honors WRT and UIS) and/or “honors contract” courses
  • 9 credits of 300-level honors seminars, the Humanities Center Seminar, and with the permission of the A&S Honors Coordinator, students may substitute a 300- or 400-level “honors contract” course for one (or possibly two) of the seminars.
  • 3 credits of either a 300-level Honors seminar taken in the senior year in which the student completes an Honors Research Project on the course topic via honors contract, or an upper-level course in the student’s major (including an independent study or an internship, as appropriate) in which the student completes an Honors Research Project via honors contract. This contract must be approved in advance by the A&S Honors Committee, and the Honors Research Project must consist of 15-25 pages of additional writing beyond the course requirements. This research project will be evaluated by both the course instructor and a member of the A&S Honors Committee (or a designated expert), and it must be submitted to the A&S Honors Coordinator two weeks before the last day of classes.

Transfer students who enter A&S with junior status or above will be waived from the first six credits of honors general education. They must complete one of the two tracks of 12 credits of advanced honors course as well as fulfill the G.P.A. requirements noted above.

Requirements: 18+ credits of graded Honors work, including:

  • 9 credits of honors general education courses (e.g., honors WRT and UIS) and/or any other approved non-business Honors courses
  • 6 credits of “honors contract” courses at the 300400 level (plus MGT/MKT 282) in the student’s major or program of study, or, when appropriate, an honors seminar
  • 3 credits in senior-level Honors: an independent study with a professor within the student’s major (HON493) or an extensive “honors contract” course at the 300–400 level within the student’s major (e.g., a semester-long project).
  • An overall Grade Point Average of 3.25+, a 3.25+ in the major, and a 3.0+ in Honors work.

All Honors courses must be taken for a letter grade in order to count toward Honors requirements.

Students who are in the 3+1 Program and maintain the required GPA can also be part of the University Honors Program.

  • 6 credits of Honors contracts. 
  • A 6-credit Honors thesis (HON 493 Honors Research and HON 494 Honors Thesis).  

Honors Non-thesis Requirements: 

  • 6 credits of Honors general education courses (e.g., honors WRT and UIS). 
  • 9 credits of Honors contracts, 300-level Honors seminars, and/or the Humanities Center Seminar. 
  • 3 credits of either a 300-level Honors seminar taken in the senior year in which the student completes an Honors Research Project on the course topic via honors contract, or an upper-level course in the student’s major (including an independent study or an internship, as appropriate) in which the student completes an Honors Research Project via honors contract. Engineering Students

Requirements: 18+ credits of graded Honors work, including:

  • 2 credits of ES 116 and 117 Freshman Honors Seminar (one credit each)
  • 6 credits of honors general education course (e.g., WRT 110/HON 182, Hum/Soc Sci Electives, and honors UIS). This requirement also may be fulfilled by "honors contract" courses.
  • 6 credits of honors work in Engineering courses (CE, ECE, ES, ME, etc.). This requirement may be fulfilled by "honors contract" courses.
  • 4-credit Honors Thesis, or 4-credit Independent Study Project, or 4-credit University Scholar Project, each supervised by an Engineering faculty member.  
  • An overall Grade Point Average of 3.0+ and a 3.0+ in each of the above Honors coursework.

Note: All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade (not P/NP).

Technology/Architecture Students

Requirements: 18+ credits of graded Honors work, including:

  • 6 credits of Honors sections of University Interdisciplinary Study courses.
  • 6 credits of Honors courses or “honors contract” courses at the 200 level or above that are part of the student’s major.
  • 6 credits of senior-level independent study courses, such as the senior project course and/or the University Scholar Project.

An overall Grade Point Average of 3.0+, and a 3.25+ in the major, and a 3.0+ in Honors work.

Note: All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade (not P/NP).

Requirements: 9+ credits of graded honors courses, including:

  • at least 6 of the 9 credits must be earned in the following courses: HONB 110, HONB 200, or HONB 210
  • up to 3 credits of an honors contract course or an HON course offered by another college on campus
  • an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher as well as a “B” or better in every honors course taken for honors program completion

Note: All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade (not P/NP). If Hillyer HON students transfer to another college of UofH, they can transfer the nine HON credits; however, in some colleges, only six HON credits will be needed and counted for the HON 100–200 requirements.

Requirements: 18+ credits of graded Honors work (with a grade of B or higher in each HON course), including a 3-credit Honors Independent Study:

  • 6–9 credits of honors general education courses (e.g., honors WRT and UIS).
  • 6–9 credits of Honors courses in any of the fine or performing arts, including University Interdisciplinary Studies  (UIS) courses, courses in the College of Arts & Sciences, Hartford Art School, or Hartt. No more than 6 credits may be taken at   Hartt, and only in courses at the 200 level and above. This requirement also may be fulfilled through “honors contract” courses.
  • Students must complete at least 12 credits from the two areas above (and at least six from each area). If 12 credits are completed, students must complete 6 more credits from the two areas below: 3 graduate course credits and 3-credit Honors Independent Study. If 15 credits are completed from the two areas above, a 3-credit Honors Independent Study must be completed (as listed below).
  • 0–3 credits of graduate-level courses at Hartt (with instructor approval).
  • 3 credits of senior-level Honors independent Study, approved by a Hartt faculty advisor and the appropriate Hartt Honors Coordinator.
  • An overall Grade Point Average of 3.5+, and a 3.0+ in Honors work.

Note: All honors courses must be taken for a letter grade, with a grade of B or higher (not P/NP).
